Use this page to add other anime terms and definitions.

Anime (ann-ee-may): Japanese for “animation”.

Bishoujo (bee-sho-jo): Japanese for a “pretty girl,” Bishoujo are cute female characters. An example of this type of character would be the cast of Miyuki-chan in Wonderland.

Bishounen (bee-sho-nen): Japanese for “pretty boy.” Bishonen are male characters who often possess very feminine features. An example of bishonen would be the male characters from Fushigi Yuugi.

Doujinshi (doe-jeen-shee): This is a term to describe manga or comics that are created by amateur artists and fans.

Dubbed/Dubbing: Refers to how a Japanese production is translated. In this case, the original voices are replaced with a new cast of voices in the language appropriate to the new audience (typically English).

Ecchi (ehtch-ee): A term for erotic or suggestive anime that is not as pornographic as “hentai”. Ecchi also, means “pervert” in Japanese.

Fan Service: This is a general term for any scene that is not integral to the plot line, but included only to excite or titillate a viewer. This can range from cleavage shots to gratuitous battle explosions. Also simply known as "service."

Fansub: This is a collection of anime that has not been commercially released, and has been translated or subtitled by fans as a way to view unreleased titles. While fansub is illegal, it is generally tolerated by companies.

Hentai (hen-tie): It means “pervert” or “perverted’ and refers to sexually explicit content, comparable to pornography.

Kawaii (kah-wah-ee): Japanese for “cute”.

Manga (mahn-guh): The Japanese term for printed comic book, and the precursor to anime.

Mecha (meck-uh): Short for giant robots, this can also mean any anime based in robotics.

OAV: Stands for “Original Animated Video,” the Japanese equivalent to direct to DVD release. Also known as OVA (Original Video Animation).

Otaku (o-tah-ku): In Japan, otaku is a derogatory term to describe an obsessed fan of a particular subject, not just anime. However, the term is often a badge of honor for hard-core anime fans in the West.

Seiyuu (say-yu): The Japanese term for “voice actor.” Typically used by Western fans when referring to Japanese voice actors.

Shoujo (sho-jo): Japanese for “girl” and describes anime targeted at females.

Shounen (sho-nen): Japanese for “boy” and describes anime targeted at males.

Subbed/Subbing: Refers to how a Japanese production is translated. In this case, the original voices are maintained and subtitles in the language appropriate to the new audience (typically English) are added.

Sweat Drop: A very common visual effect in both anime and manga settings. The sweat drop can be used to express a variety of emotions, including embarassment, shock, and tension. Sweat drops are used extensively in most animes, especially those themed toward younger audiences. They are also commonly used by a character reacting to another character's failed pun or joke.

Yaoi (yow-ee): Stories in anime or manga which focus on male homosexuality.

Yuri (yu-ri): Stories in anime or manga which focus on female homosexuality.

^_^ : An anime-style pictographical emoticon, used to express happiness. The carets ( ^ ) represent eyes, while the underscore ( _ ) represents the mouth. A variety of variations have been adapted, primarily in the chat room setting, to express other sentiments.

^_^; : An anime-style pictographical emotion, featuring a "sweat drop". The semi-colon represents the sweat drop, suggesting tension, nervousness, or embarassment. The sweat drop feature is frequently used in the community and worth mentioning.

-_- : A face of stare, mostly based on Konata Izumi. It mostly represents being annoyed, annoying, or tired. ( - ) for the eyes and ( _ ) for the mouth.

Every generation has the title that will be remembered for a life-time. For any kid who is old enough to remember 1998 most likely can tell you about the powers of Pokemon. Children’s entertainment hasn’t been the same since. After Hello Kitty, this marketing superpower spawned everything from a trading card game to a dozen video games for a variety of platforms. The greatest success was being able to inspire not only fandom of the television series (and the several movies!) but to profit from the additional merchandise so well.

Conventions

For those who can’t get enough anime on their own through movie theaters or DVDs, there are many conventions where "otaku” - fans - can gather to watch the newest releases, purchase merchandise at swap meets, and exchange ideas. It's a great way for anime fans to learn about new types of animes and even meet important players of their favorite animes. Sometimes you can meet the cast; other times, if you're lucky, you can meet the original creator!

Many conventions also feature "cosplays". Cosplays - cos-tume plays - are essentially contests wherein fans dress up like their favorite anime characters. Sometimes cosplays feature dance contests, fight sequences, voice impersonations, and more. There are usually judges and prizes - bragging rights, included - and it's always full of people worth meeting.

How many people really like vampires? i know i do they are really great in anime and manga. Some of the pages of storyies are really fun and sexy. they are dark and shady and they make you want to read them more and more. Here is a preview of an upcoming story! It's called BANG!
Chapter 1 “Monkey stops drawing on the wall or else no playtime” said Ryo “wah you Meany where’s mangroo I want mangroo now” she cried, “Here is mangroo now put these earphones in and pay attention” saku replied. Everyone was waiting for his or her American manager who was kind of wacky. Karu was going over the music for the concert they were about to play soon, while saku and ryo tried to get control of monkey.” Aaahhh let go of me …lalaalalal bang hey it’s my song yeah, now what were you saying saku?” “Finally we got your attention we have to release 3 new cds in 4 wks ok?” “Kool now where is Chad, how many cds how many cds have we released so far ryo?” “We have released 7 so far and Chad is in a meeting, now sit down and listen to the music.” Good thing that I really like ryo or else he is in big trouble right mangroo, thought monkey. Hours passed and no sign of there wacky manager, then something fell from the ceiling right in front monkey it turned out to be Chad. “Chad you’re silly can I do that it looks fun?” “No” everyone agreed, they all knew that monkey was kind of out there until it was time to play a gig then she was a prodigy brilliant at everything, yet she never shows it. “Guys I have good news you’re doing a photo shoot and it’s about couples so get your boyfriends and your girlfriends.” Chad brushes of the dust from his shirt as he waits for a answer then ryo speaks” cool but one problem me and monkey are single how are we supposed to do this” Chad pondered a while the said “why don’t you and monkey be a couple does that sound good to you monkey” “sure I like the idea being near ryo isn’t so bad” “ hey what’s that so supposed to mean” answered ryo hotly “ hey it’s time to go we have a concert you know, you ready monkey, saku, ryo?” “Monkey is ready let’s doing this” “yep I’m ready to show the hot gay guys what I’m made of” saku answered “hey monkey I’m talking to you what did you mean?” Monkey runs out pumped to go and have fun; while being chased by Karu and saku both thinking that who knows what she’ll do by herself. Ryo runs after everybody then catches up with monkey and tells everyone that they will be back. His heart was beating fast only because he was holding monkey’s hand. Everyone is amped yet there was still no sign of monkey or ryo.” We’re we going ryo the concert is about-“. Ryo kisses monkey before she finishes her sentence. “I don’t understand why I care about you but I do so much.” “Umm” she blushes and takes of running towards the stage leaving ryo with a fast beating heart. “Hi guys you ready to jam?” “ Yeah if only ryo was here monkey!” saku answered hotly “ sorry I’m late things to do, but I’m here so lets jam” “ ryo yeah now lets get this party started” replied Karu “ monkey listen to me if I did anything wrong I’m sorry” “ umm gotta go find my drum sticks ryo lets talk later” 12 hours later “It’s a lil past midnight what do you want Karu” “monkey what happened why did you leave ryo looking stupid” “it’s nothing … I just felt sick” “you’re not pregnant are you … what am I talking about you’re still a virgin he” “hey stop teasing me I just … well ryo kissed me when we left for that while” “ohhh my god he loves you but do like /love him?” “Umm I gotta go u know lot’s of sleep … bye” At ryo house he can’t stop thinking of monkey god I guess monkey doesn’t like me and there I go and kiss her, if I was I would ignore me too. This is stupid I can’t believe I did that I wonder what she is thinking of me now. Man I messed up big time why can’t I do anything right…”zzzz hmmm monkey” I don’t understand why my heart is beating for ryo to kiss me again, I mean sure he is cute what am I saying mangroo he is hot! Why am I feeling like this now …”zzzz ryo I need you?” The couple of days were awarked for both ryo and monkey, if the bumped into each other they would blush like crazy Saku and Karu giggled at this. Saku and Karu came up with a plan they would get their manager to leave and Saku would take ryo to studio m and Karu would put monkey’s drum remix there and ask her to go find it and they would lock them alone together and see what would happened. The plan began that day. “Hey Chad can you ask the honcho if he wants us to begin the next 7 cads today or when? Thanx!” “Sure will do ok everyone go over you’re music” “hey monkey why are you and mangroo behaving today are you sick,” asked Karu “huh no I just don’t feel like playing around today”. “Hey ryo can I talk to you alone please!” “What do u wants Saku?” “I need to tell you something important” “fine guys we’ll be back in 5 mins”. “Okay we are going to go over monkey’s drum remix, monkey can you get your drum mix k?” “Sure now where is it” ryo and Saku headed out towards studio m monkey following out behind them looking into the other studios. As they headed into the studio ryo gets pretty angry and says “what do u want I don’t have time for this I have to get monkey to forgive for whatever I’m sorry but I have to go… get the hell out of my way. Grunt” “I know that you kissed my baby sister and that is way she is not like she usually is and for that u have to explain to” “how did you find out, did Karu tell you or did you see us?” “ No my sister and Karu both came up me and told me what you did before you came over here” “ why did she tell you, even more to the matter why or how did she sound when she told you this?” “Why would you do that my sister is terrified of you!” “ I really like your sister and I thought she liked me too but, I don’t know I guess she didn’t feel the same way o’ I don’t know anymore what I’m saying” Monkey walks right on cue, she heads toward the stand to see if her drum remix was there. “Don’t mind me I just looking for my drum. Ahah I found them well good-bye have a nice talk” she looks toward the guys realizing that her brother is not there, she is all alone with ryo and doesn’t know what to do. She bolts for the door hoping that it is unlocked, so she can escape and never be alone with ryo again, to her dismiss the door is locked shut and she can’t get out. Ryo begins to speak thanking saku in his mind for this. “Listen I know that you hate me for yesterday and I wanna say I’m so sorry monkey” “umm help! Me! I need help…umm what did you say you’re sorry for making me feel like I belong, so you took pity on me” “no, I mean I’m sorry if you felt like I made you feel really weird” “listen here ryo I thought that you liked me but I see that you were playing me so fuck you” “listen monkey it’s not like that I mean it…” “No you listen to me scumbag …” “ shut up and finally listen to me I care about you even if you don’t like me back okay I really feel for you … come here.” Ryo grabs monkey by the waist and holds her, she is franticly trying to move away but finally gives up and lets him hold her awhile longer, she turns around with tears in her eyes and smiles at him, he pushes her hair back and kisses her until she kisses him back. They were having a lovely moment when Chad falls from the ceiling looking as surprised as ryo and monkey were.” Ummm Chad do you have any idea where my drum remix is at, I’ve been looking for it this whole time humph” “yeah Chad we’re kind of locked in here and …” just then Karu and saku burst into the room and saku says “sorry guys I didn’t realized I locked the door on my way out hope you weren’t to scared” “hey monkey did you find the drum remix so that we can begin to jam like we said we would?” “Yeah I got them Karu, they were here on the stand like yesterday well lets go and jam” “ good I really want to add that to the new song I’ve been working on” “Chad hello it’s me saku are you okay you seem like you’re in shock what happened?” … The silence becomes very awarked everything of Chad life was falling apart he came to see if he could ask monkey out but it turns out she is with ryo his mind was racing with the thoughts of how could monkey does this to me I’m the one who got her little group started and she does this as a thank you very much. His cell phone begins to ring he awakens from his trance and answers it. “Hello oh hi Mr.Presdient you want to see me right now? … Ummm …Ummm… okay I’ll head right up here thank you” “hey Chad what did the president want?” “Well monkey you guys have the day off for one and the president want to talk about who is taking over the company that’s all” “hopefully we get a cool president I mean sorry but a stuck-up dude just won’t do” “ yep your right but will Chad end up becoming the president?” “Ahhhhhhhhhhh well that won’t happen” “ well lil kids I have to go so you can have the day off okay and next week will work on ryo’s and saku’s parts” Chad leaves the room as everyone decides what they were going to do for the next 2 days. “Well I was going to be with my baby mike but he is out of town” whined saku “well you could go sumo wrestling with me” “well okay that sounds fun” “Karu want to go shopping I need to get brand new outfits ““me too and then later on we can go out to eat something sounds good” “sure that is great okay let’s head out” everyone headed out to begin their 2 day vacation. Saku and ryo are depressed both the people they care about don’t even pay attention to their feelings. Monkey wonders why I feel this way for ryo. And Karu wonders is Kevin cheating on me? Chad heads up to the boss office to find out if he will become the new boss. Mr. Kaneva can’t wait to tell Chad that his grandchild melody will take over the company. As he waits for Chad to come up he begins to plan out what he wants melody to do after he leaves he expects great things of her so does everyone else he thought. Chad climbs up the long winding staircase since the elevators were out. He wonders whom the successor to the old man will be probably one of his family members thought Chad. Finally he reaches the top of the stair case huffing madly he begins to say to himself “I should work out…” then he is interrupted by Mr.kaneva booming voice Chad hurry up and get in here. He wonders if his boss has x-ray vision because the door is closed. He finally enters and the boss begins to say “well it’s about time you got up here what took you so long I need to explain the rules and terms of the new boss which you must follow” “sorry boss the elevators were out again so I had to climb up the staircase” “well let’s talk about my successor who will be my granddaughter melody” “who is melody I didn’t know that you had a granddaughter” “wait aren’t you the manager of bang!” “Well yes I don’t know what that has to do with your successor ““it’s simple my granddaughter is part of the band she is the drummer” “WHAT!!! Monkey is your granddaughter so that means that saku is your grandson?” “Yes she is and so is he what you didn’t know that they were my grandkids” “no I didn’t Ummm… she never mention well neither did saku I wonder why?” “I knew that they were kind of secretive about me because they want to be known for their talent not by me you get it?” “I do now but why monkey or should I say melody take over the company why not saku he is the eldest right?” “He is of course the eldest but he doesn’t have a mind for business but my granddaughter does have it she ran the company for 8 months last year!” “She did I thought it was you bossing me around like a lil lap dog!” “Nope it was her I was very ill so she took over and she did a great job right?” “Yes she did a really good job it was almost like it was you” “sees I told you that she has a knack for business, saku doesn’t really understand the meaning of being a boss” “ I understand sir so what are the terms that I must keep check of when she is boss?” “No these terms are for you Chad” “what why do I need terms? I have done everything you ask me to do” “ it was not my idea it was melody’s she says it’s to protect everyone’s partner or something like that” “ no oh no did she tell you that I’m in love with her but at the same time mad at her for dating ryo?” “No she did not but now I understand exactly why she put these terms upon you” “ sir I didn’t know I’m so sorry” “ well listen now here are the terms 1 you Are not allowed to interfere with any of the relationships that the band may have. 2 you are to take orders from the following people Melody, ryo, saku, Karu, zack. 3 you are to never show any affection to melody and 4 you are to leave schedules for the band to melody got it?” “Yes sir I understand I will leave you be now” he bows then rises up and begins to head to the door when the boss says” I know that it must be hard for you but you must keep you’re feeling for my granddaughter separate then that of work” “yes sir “Chad leaves the office sad that he could never show any affections towards monkey. He begins to plan around the terms what if he made so that ryo just happens to fall for another girl and leave melody hmmm... then she would be heart broken and I’ll be there to comfort her yes! He thought. Everyone was enjoying there day off the girls where in disguise trying to find some new outfits.” Umm Karu does this look tomboyish to you?” “Yeah it does why you ask and aren’t you going to find so new fighting outfits?” “Well me and mangroo think it’s time to change looks now we are tried of being in fighting out fits and all the girls that are tomboys are really cool and tough and me and mangroo want to be like that” “I guess if you want to do that then okay I’ll help you find your new tomboy look” “yeah you hear that mangroo we are going to be tomboys!” “Hey is your cell phone ring monkey or is it mine?” “Aaahhh it mine its granddaddy I wonder what he wants” “yes is melody there?” “Hi granddad what do you want?” “Well I wanted to tell you that you are the new boss of kaneva.inc what do you think?” “That is great yeah I’m so happy and I have so many ideas to increase our output of music and other things ““well hunny I have to go but I’ll talk to you tonight” “okay granddad see you later” she thinks to herself wow the whole company under my control I hope that I do a great job taking over and upholding my family name. “Monkey what was that all about?” “Just that I’m the new boss of kaneva.inc yeah” “really that’s great but how did you manage to pull it off?” “ Well let me put it this way my grandfather is the owner and boss of the company but not because of that did we get signed on it was because we have talent don’t be mad at me “ “ I’m not mad at you but wow I never knew that well this is gonna be great and you can command Chad to do whatever we want” “ I know but he has restrictions that I put on him when I take over” Then the phone rings again but not monkey’s it was karu’s phone she answers” hello it’s Karu here what do you want?” “Hey Karu is my sis there did she hear who is going to be the new boss?” “Yeah she did just now I mean wow I can’t believe it” “well it’s good that she got it my grandpa just told me I’m so happy for my sis!” “How is ryo taking the news?” “He loves the idea of her being the boss, ryo says to tell monkey that he is about to call her okay?” “Sure monkey ryo is going to call you right now okay?” “Sure Karu and here he is; hello babe it’s me how about the new of me being your boss hmmm” “ I, love the idea you deserve to be the boss muah I send you 2 kisses and 4 hugs okay I’ll see you tonight at 9 okay baby?” “Yeah I see you then me and Karu have to go we have run into a fan group gotta run” beep they look at one another and laugh they begin to run out of the store and head out towards their car and begin to decide what they are gonna do with the rest of the day seeing how many fans are there waiting to see them. They decide that they will get to the rave that monkey’s friends were having at the old mall. “ Wow I cant believe that they saw through our disguises well I guess we should go and change our clothes before we go to the rave” “you’re right monkey lets put on our new clothes” the head towards Karu home to change then head out to the rave. The guys worried if the fans attacked them leave the wrestling match and head out to find the girls. Ryo calls monkey’s cell phone while saku calls Karu on his cell. “Hello babe what is it ““are you okay where are you guys head?” “Hey it’s Karu what up saku” “I’m just wondering if you guys are okay we left the match to see if you guys are okay?” both girls look at each other mouthing out what are they thinking we can defend ourselves. Both respond “we’re fine we are an about to got to a rave at the old mall”. The guys look at each other and say well let’s go and tell the girls that they’ll be there as they get ready” the girls agree to meet them there.

Early Days

In the early 20th century the film industry was emerging and provided new opportunities for illustrators, particularly in the United Sates which resulted in the standard setting success of such animation houses as Disney and the Fleisher Brothers (Popeye, Betty Boop and later, Superman). Japanese artists were strongly influenced by these early works of American animation. However, while the first flickers of Japanese animation can be dated to 1914, the cultural isolation of the Japanese hindered the evolution of the medium until after World War II.

Manga and anime developed slowly for ten years after the war, before maturing into a medium that has since defined a countries creative expression of the 20th century. This expression is two-fold, and examines new frontiers through a unique visual language and a narrative form previously reserved for live action television and film.

American Influence

Early manga, and consequently, anime, was heavily influenced by the American animation as characters were drawn with huge eyes to draw in the audience, similar to Mickey Mouse and the original Disney characters. These large eyes originally evoked high levels of sensitivity and emotion in female characters, but have since become the trademark anime facial expression. The term “super deformed style” is used to describe characters that look toddler-like, and are often used for logos and advertising. While most of the characters look Caucasian, there is no connection to race. Black-hair characters are usually more trust worthy and true, while blonde characters must be watched for their deviant ways.

Narrative Development

On the narrative side, two significant elements have been included since its beginnings that have help to establish a devoted and diverse audience. Unlike American animation, which is episodic and consequently finite, anime adopted from live-action television the concept of a continual story line running from episode to episode. This allowed the viewer to invest in the development of the characters and continually track their adventures.

Concurrently, anime encompassed a wide range of themes derived directly from the cultural and social atmosphere of the ever-changing times. It is this combination that has awarded anime with an audience not restricted by age or interest, but engrossed by the fantastic reflection of their lives.

What is anime?

Anime is not simply a term for the Japanese styles of animation, but rather a medium of art and storytelling that holds a mirror up to every aspect of Japanese life and culture. Like Western animation, anime developed as a result of the technical capability to bring still images to life through the process of motion pictures. The foundation for Western animation is rooted in comic books, mirrored in the Japanese counterpart of manga (pronounced “mahn-guh”). The two are so intertwined that it is difficult to discuss one independent of the other.

Anime is often compared to cartoons; however, there is a distinct difference between the two. Unlike the Western ideal of "status quo", wherein the end of an episode returns the characters and setting to its original point, anime often involves a linear, continuing story arc. Characters grow, change, and evolve over time in anime, new characters are introduced, and the events of one episode affect the next.

What is manga?

Manga is the umbrella term for all comic books in Japan. They are not limited to a youth audience, but instead target a wide age group with a genre and theme for all ages and interests. The literal translation of the term is “random (or whimsical) pictures” that are only produced in a print format. The defining characteristic of manga is the focus and attention to lines—not color, as most pages are still printed in black and white (except for the cover). As is often the case, a manga story or character is animated and introduced to the realm of anime.

Like anime, manga is often referred to by its Western "equivalent": comic books. In recent years, however, the term "graphic novel" has gained much popularity, as it neither implies an immature audience nor a funny nature. While many manga are, in fact, humorous, there are serious manga genres as well. The introduction of manga into Western society has seen a rise in graphic novels from a variety of cultures and has redefined the concept of artistic, visual storytelling.
