Hentai is a Japanese term meaning “perverted,” and—due to the explicit nature of its content—refers to any anime targeted at adult audiences. The hentai industry is much like that of the porn industry in the West, with the number of subgenres limited only by imagination and sexual fantasy.


While Japanese society has laws against the production of Western-style adult entertainment, the illustrated version brings an absurd twist to the term “graphic” art. For example, because explicit animated intercourse between the likeness of two people is prohibited, hentai often replaces the male character with a tentacle-wielding monster.
